history

The first Melodic Impact concert was held in April 2007, raising more than $5,000 for Special Love, Inc. Melodic Impact was founded by Grace Deng and Jenny Van, two University of Virginia graduates from Taiwan who had recently entered the working world and missed the days when they performed music as students. The two initially planned simply to hold a recital, but inspired by benefit events organized by others, they decided to turn their recital into a benefit concert. To find a charity to benefit, Deng and Van worked with Michael Zhuang, president of MZ Capital, LLC. With Zhuang's help and sponsorship, they eventually settled on Special Love, Inc., as that organization fit their criteria of being locally-based, helping children, and benefiting cancer patients.

Having found a cause to benefit, Deng and Van went out on a limb and recruited musicians, graphic designers, as well as other volunteers from their network of friends and acquaintances. They found performers ranging from classical violinists to singer songwriters, and convinced local merchants to sponsor the event through contributing goods to a silent auction. The concert was generally very well-received by the audience of 200 attendees, which was comprised largely of the (mostly amateur) performers' friends, families and co-workers, as well as Special Love, Inc. donors. Compelled to continue the success of Melodic Impact 2007, Jeff Hsin and Pauline Wu, two of the concert's performers, volunteered to organize the concert in 2008.
